Glitter Jar

Today we are going to make a Glitter Jar. I just love shaking these and staring at them as the glitter spins and swirls through the bottle! It is so calming. 🙂

To get started, you will need a water bottle, glitter, food coloring (optional) and some glycerin. I like to use the Voss water bottles because they are very sturdy and have nice smooth sides, but any water bottle will do. Glycerin can be found in the pharmacy section of the store, and you will need about 6 oz. I chose gold glitter and foil stars because I wanted my glitter bottle to look like the galaxy. To add to that effect, I also chose black food coloring. You can use any glitter and coloring that you prefer… Be creative!

The first step is to fill the bottle about 1/4 full of glycerin. I used a full 6 oz bottle, and I liked how it turned out. You can play around with more or less glycerin to get the effect that you want.

Next you will add the glitter. You will want about 1/4 inch of glitter plus any other decorations you want to include. I put in 3 pinches of each of my 3 types of stars in with the glitter.

Now you can add the water. Fill the bottle until you are about an inch from the top. Add food coloring at this point as well, if you are wanting to have some color in your bottle.

Put the lid on tightly and give the bottle a good shake to mix everything together. You will probably notice some clumping in the glitter. If this happens, remove the lid and stir around with a plastic utensil or a popsicle stick. You can also add about 3 drops of liquid dish soap to help the glitter be less clumpy. Replace the lid and shake the bottle again. If you are happy with the results, remove the lid and add water until you are near the top. I left just a little space at the top to allow it to shake easier, but I wanted the empty space covered by the lid.

When you replace the lid the final time, I would recommend using hot glue or E6000 to secure the lid in place. You don’t want to accidentally have the lid come off and spill that mixture all over the place!

Now shake your bottle and watch as the glitter swirls, spins, and settles. It is fun to see the different patterns and movements as the fluids move around in the bottle. Enjoy watching your glitter bottle and letting it help you to be calm!
